I've moved to my new house since last November but I never got around doing what I was supposed to do in a jiffy - decorating it. I could conveniently blame it on the fact that I'm taking an Executive MBA course now but truth be told, I have been busy socializing with my newfound circle of friends.

Hanging out with these friends reminds me fondly of the days when I was still hanging out with another group of friends whom I acquainted through ICERED.com. Years later, except for my hubby, I have not seen most of the people since the group drifted apart in 2004. Sad but true. Friends do have a shelf life especially when your so-called friends are in fact acquaintances whose 'companionship' was never meant to last anyway.

Enough said. Life is too short to have it dribbled away. While I don't foresee maintaining long-term relationships with all of these friends, I hope some will eventually turn out to be my friends for life. So far, I have identified some of them whom I really wanna keep close to my heart and in my life until one of us lie on our deathbeds :p

Digressing, here are some photos of my not-so-new place to share...more photos will be shared as soon as I find time and energy to take them...Ha!

Been really busy with my EMBA assignment which never seems to be completing.

Been really busy trying to apply what I've learnt from EMBA at work but I dun think you'd understand what the hell I am talking about.

Dressing up the Living Room

I've been scratching my head for some inspiration to do up the living room of my soon-to-be new home. Lately, I kinda fancy the look of a black & white french/venetian inspired home. I may not be able to fully achieve the look due to budget constraint...but what the hell, just go with the flow and my FEEL...Did a mock up (an ugly one at that) of one side of the living room. Let me know what you think, k. If it's ugly, feel free to speak :)

Please allow me to clarify...I don't have proper designing tools (even if I have, I won't know how to use) to express my thoughts...so I used PAINT software to create this makeshift mock up. The black thing straight ahead is going to be a dark mirrored chest of drawers. Above it, is going to be a mirror...on the chest of drawer, I am thinking of displaying 2 silver candle stands (of different height), 1 white colour bird cage and 1 black laquer lamp, probably plus a pot of orchid if space permits. The white stuff at the side of the chest is supposed to be a chair. Preferably one that is french looking. to the other side of the chest is a pot of indoor plant. Next to the indoor plant, I intend to paint (scribble-paint) a black/white/grey themed artwork on canvas.

What do you think? Should I leave the hallway clean or should I make it look busy? I kinda like my idea, do you?

Got a small farewell gift for a little girl who's going to further her studies in Oz ....The point is,...I feel so pleased for keeping the box that came with the bottle of Singapore Sling I bought previously. Keke...You see, I'm a sucker for packaging. I can never bear to throw these nice boxes away...got quite a few of them at home :p Are you a sucker like me too?

Haven't got the time to blog lately. Well, the truth is, it's a convenient excuse for my lacklustre albeit busy life. Lately, my daily routine has always been work and mahjong plus some occasional house-hunting. I figured that since I'm gonna embark on a no-return uphill journey to attain my MBA, I better enjoy how ever much I can before the shit hits the fan. Yes it's that bad because I ain't exactly the-best-student-in-class sort.

Getting into NTU is almost like a dream come through especially for polytechnic graduates like me who weren't privy or ~~some~~ many say good enough to be accepted by local universities. I'm blessed to have my course fully paid for by my company and SPRING Singapore. Without them, I would never dream of doing this. Special thanks to my CEO and CFO who have helped me so much to get this and thanks to them for pre-granting me so much time off work to complete this.

I finally sent in my application for the NUS Asia Pacific Executive MBA programme. Not sure if I'll get in...hopefully I guess. The application requires me to answer this question:

"How would you define yourself and what would you want to achieve as a leader?"

And this is the answer I gave...*bleah*

I always knew what I want to achieve in life.

In times when I am not privileged to do so, I have no qualms to trial and error until I know what I want. This is evident when I first graduated from Singapore Polytechnic with a Diploma in Chemical Process Technology.

At that time, through my experience gained from the compulsory course attachment program, I already knew that I would definitely not be able to get used to working in a laboratory or a factory. That decision prompted me to search for alternative career paths to pursue.

I attempted to fit into the accounting line by working as an Accounts Assistant while pursuing my ACCA qualifications but I found the job too mundane. That was when I resolved to try sales and marketing. I was fortunate to be given a chance to work in a non-profit organization where I was truly given the opportunity to define who I want to be and who I am today.

To be in a leadership role is almost everybody’s dream but not everybody can excel as well as one another. I was again blessed to be given a chance to hone my leadership skills early in my career under the guidance of a few good mentors.

Helping the company chart towards its corporate goals and achieving them is every employee’s job but a leader's job is more than that. A leader is there to guide the team in achieving this objective effectively and efficiently. A leader is there to herd the team on behalf of the company for productivity. The same leader is also there to give advice and act as a listening ear for the team members whenever needed.

Through the years, other than the occasional glory that I get out of being a leader, I realized that this position is not just another avenue to bring home the dough. As a leader, I have a much more important and meaningful mission to fulfill. I need to develop my team members, nurture them and give them the opportunity to define who they can be tomorrow.

A true leader cannot succeed without his/her team members and likewise the team will not be able to do well without a wise and knowledgeable leader. It is with this in mind that I want to pursue an EMBA programme so that I can continue to nurture and guide my team.

My shoe cabinet is so busted

I've been working and shopping in Hong Kong over these 2 weeks. Certain nights we worked past midnight and certain nights, I shopped nearly till midnight :p...

By the way, the next time you are heading to Hong Kong, here are some of my recommendations for you if you are a bargain hunter like me...

Head to "Garden Street". What they sell: clothes and shoes. Small little shops that carry some of the latest requisitions from China. Go to this place before you even head to big shopping belts like Tsim Sha Tsui or Causeway Bay as things tend to be marked up at more touristy places.I bought a pair of high heel shoes (mock tiger fur print) at only HK$49 can!!

Some of the shoes I bought in the month of March...

Head to "Temple Street" market first before you head to "Woman Street". Although the variety of things sold at Temple Street may not be as wide as "Woman Street", chances are things will be a lot cheaper. I bought a Burberry inspired shawl at HK$30, similar one is sold at Woman Street for HK$138. Also bought a aroma-burner at HK$15. Cheap can! I also bought a hand-crafted wooden Starbucks logo at HK$100...I heart! By the way, plan to have your dinner at Temple Street. There are lotsa "Dai Pai Dong"...makan makan.

Head to Tsim Sha Tsui. Keep scouting for good stuff there. Sometimes you can find some really good bargains. I visited this mini-mall called Granville Identity when they were having a really crazy promo - enjoy 40% off when you buy 4 items and above. My gawd, cheong ah!! I got a Skin79 BB cream at only HK$75 after discount! Don't be shy to go into shops like In-Fashion - a Hkg version of This Fashion. You'll never know what you can find.

Head to Causeway Bay. Again. Just keep scouting for good stuff there. Don't forget to visit a mini-market there. It's in-between Giordano and Bonjour (opposite U2). You might find some good buys there...There are also some shops at the side of the market. Do yourself a favor - squeeze into these shops and dig for some good deals. Also do visit shops that are way up in the sky. They are most likely to carry bargains than those on the ground floor.

Head to Wanchai if you are into sample or reject clothes. You might find Victoria Secrets or Kenneth Cole. What I bought before a Kenneth Cole Blazar for B at only HK$100.

Outlet shopping in Hong Kong. Yes! I just found out that there is an outlet mall in Hong Kong. It's called citigate outlets, located at QingYi. I haven't been there but i think it should be worth checking out.

Sex and the City

It's a good thing that HBO is running Sex and the City again. I really really love this show. Everytime I watch it, it never fail to walk me down the memory lane - back to more than 5 years ago before I am B's missus.

I have mixed feelings about singlehood and the dating scene. I have to confess that I was once a love masochist. No, I'm not talking about kamasutra or sex here. Hello!!

I mean I used to like the feeling of sadness from my relationships. You know what I mean? The heartache, the crying etc.

Of course when it happened then, I felt so bad that I thought I wouldn't be able to survive the ordeal. On hindsight, I kinda enjoy it. Sometimes I miss it so much that I try to induce the same feeling every now and then by watching soppy movies. Isn't this masochism?

Having said that, although I miss singlehood, but no thanks, don't put me back there again. I love B and I love where I am now too much and I wouldn't risk it ever for anything.

I hope you too will treasure what you have with your significant other. At the end of the day, apart from your parents and siblings, he/she is the closest thing you have on earth.

Obsessed with Serial Killers

Recently I've been quite obsessed with crime and investigation, particularly in serial murder cases. I find serial killers intriguing. Not that I'm keen to be one, I'm just interested to know what drove them to do what they do. Is it inborn or is it a result of their upbringing? If you know the answer, tell me, can?

According to an FBI Behavorial Unit study, 85% of the world's serial killers are in America. Ermmm, this is crazy, can. Why America? Why?? Are Americans twisted because of the environment? Is it because they're more exposed to aliens? Or are serial killers aliens?

I'm very disturbed. Why America?? I love that country! Somewhere deep in my heart, I'm hoping that I can migrate or work in that country one day. I like the weather. I like the shopping. I like the fact that I can zip around the country with no passport. Okay, sorry I digressed. I wish someone can tell me why America produces more serial killers than any other country.

A further research into the topic brought me to this site which names the top 10 evil serial killers in the world &/or universe. The number 1 evil serial killer was suspected to have killed as many as 600 children. Other than raping his victims, this killer liked to torture and see his victims suffer in agony. Worst of all, he liked to bathe in their blood. This is madness!!!

These killers scare the hell outta me. I'm so scared that I'd rather have an encounter with a ghost than to have an encounter with these living monsters. They have no sense of guilt or remorse. How can anyone not have a sense of guilt or remorse? Even my dogs can feel guilt. Don't believe me? Okay, next time i'll take a photo of them with the guilty look and prove you wrong.

Alright. Sorry lah. I don't know what to blog about lately. There are topics in my head but unfortunately I can't share much here. That's why I decided to bore you with my serial killer obsession. Heh.

Firstly, the staff is in the wrong. This is no way to treat customers.

SW Shepherd's Pie Recipe

SW's Shepherd's Pie is delicious.

I kid you not.

Meat Base:

500g minced beef. You can replace this with lamb if you don't eat beef.

1 big yellow onion

2 whole cloves of garlic

3 petal of bay leaves

Veggie Base:

4 big carrots

1 can of button mushrooms - sliced thinly

200g frozen peas

4 big tomatoes - sliced

Half a small can of tomato paste or puree

Seasoning:

1 teaspoon of salt

1/4 teaspoon of pepper

1 teaspoon of of mixed spice (basil and oregon)

2 teaspoon of dark soy sauce

Steps:

Stir fry onion and garlic with butter

Fry till beef turns colour. You may add red wine to enhance flavour.

Add 2 cups of water

Add bay leaves and simmer for 1 hour

After 1 hour, add carrots + tomatoes and simmer for another 30 mins.

During the 20 min mark after you have added carrots and tomatoes, add mushrooms, green peas, tomato paste and seasoning.

Towards the end of the 30 mins, add in cornstarch solution to make it creamy.

Topping:
1kg of potatoes, skinned and cut into big chunks. cook in water with salt and simmer for 20 nins. Poke to test softness. Strain water then add butten (2 big teaspoon) plus 1/4 cup of evaporated milk and mash

Final Steps:

Spread meatsauce onto carousel.

Spread potatoes on top of meatsauce.

Sprinkle 75g of cheddar cheese or mozzarella cheese.

Bake for 3 - 5 mins on 200 degrees if you are using turbo broiler or 10 mins in traditional oven on 180 degrees (use upper grill)

Voila! Ready to serve. Serves 4

Do you suppport local celebrities? Well,....I don't but I respect some of them for their talents and humour.

One of them is Bryan Wong. Don't think he's siao siao man in person just because he's siao siao on screen. Judging from his blog (www.bryanwong.sg), this man is actually more melancholic than anyone else. I guess his melancholic self is needed to balance his crazy persona on TV.He's also quite talented. Sometimes I wish I know this man personally. Not because he's a celeb, but because he genuinely seems like a nice friend to have.

I particularly like his taste and penchant for interior designing. If you have never caught an episode of Home Decor on Channel 8, check out some of the before-and-after photos taken by Bryan. I'm sure after seeing them, you will go wahhhhh...

Bachie's Minestrone Recipe

B has been bugging me for this recipe ever since I promised to post my recipe here. He simply couldn't stand the fact that he isn't the only one at home who's a natural cook. It's hilarious.

Anyway, here's my minestrone recipe that I promised you. It's very simple to cook. Try it and let me know if you like it, can?

Preparation of Ingredients
5 - 6 sticks of big carrots > dice into 1cm X 1cm cubes
5 - 6 tomatoes > sliced into smaller pieces (don't worry much about making these look good as they'll dissolve in the soup)
3 yellow onions > dice
3 Potatoes > dice into 1cm X 1cm cubes
1 can of kidney beans
1 bottle / can of tomato paste/puree
1 big pack of chicken stock

Throw in everything into a pot and boil until the carrots are soft. Then add salt to taste.

Easy Peasy?

I told you it'll be uncomplicated.

How was New Year's Eve for you?

Did you welcome the new year with a group of good friends, quietly with your family or simply alone?

Whichever way, it doesn't matter as long as you spent the time, just the way you liked it.

I spent it in style with a group of good friends whom we fondly call ourselves "The Gossippers" for obvious reasons. :)

Unlike previous years when we usually meet on Christmas Eve at one of our homes to welcome Christmas, we totally broke the rule in 2009 by meeting on New Year's Eve at a serviced apartment in Singapore.

It was the best decision we ever made.

Through one of our connections, we managed to book a Somerset Compass 3 bedroom apartment at the eleventh hour.

We had a fantastic time, can. Thank you guys, for making the last day of 2009 memorable. *big smiles*

Baby treated me to dinner at Cacio e Pepe again. One of my favourite Italian restaurants - possibly in Singapore. I didn't write this post (see blog in the link attached) but I swear that it's pretty well written. A post that I certainly do not know how to write. All I know is the food was/is delicious. Die die must try.

The other day, at a drinking session with the old farts, I asked them for their thoughts on several questions. What's your strategy in your career life? What's your meaning in life?

Everybody knew what their strategy is at work but nobody (or maybe most of us) seemed to be able (unable) to articulate what their meaning in life is. That includes me. Is it that difficult? Doesn't it suck that we don't have a meaning in life? So life is all about makan, work, sleep and then mati? SUX!

Anyway, I digress.

I went on a road trip to Malacca and KL recently. The company was fun but the destinations weren't really that exciting. After this trip, I can safely conclude that these two places are only worth visiting once in every 8 years at least. S put it rightly. We've all grown up over the years. Our needs have changed. These places can no longer fulfill what we are looking for.

When you walk around the small city of Malacca, you will be tempted with many food choices mainly chicken rice (there are many chicken rice stalls), nynoya food and chendol.
This combination was exactly what we ate in a day.

Secret recipe that will make any chicken rice tastes delicious. Dao-You aka Dark Soya Sauce.
My rice will usually be fully coated with it before I dig in. It's a must for me. Yummy!

The restaurant that serves only chendol.
It has a very nice ambience.
Authentic decoration and Olivia Ong singing at the back. Perfect.
The feeling it gave me was almost similar to Starbucks.
The only difference is there isn't any coffee.

Most Memorable Events in My Life (Part 1 of 3)

I'm alone at home (minus the 3 dogs and my housekeeper). Dad went home to stay for a few days. B is in Shanghai for work. I'm watching a crappy movie on Star Movies. I'm bored to death.

By the time B comes home next week, I'll be in Hong Kong for work and by the time I return, he'll be in Tokyo. It's a hectic month for both of us. I'm tempted to go Tokyo with B since we can't make it to NYC this year. He works, I play. Sounds like a good deal? [UPDATE: BOO! The flight to Tokyo is full! Man! :'(]

That's not all of my travel schedule this month. The Gossipers and I are going on a road trip to Malaysia. I can't wait. We'll be driving to Malacca and Kuala Lumpur. Heh. I'm so happy.

Anyway, because B is not home, I have tonnes of time to think and reflect on life. In line with that, I thought it might be interesting for me to list out the events/activities that happened in the first 10 years of my life.

Age 1 Year 1976

I was conceived and born.

Age 2 Year 1977

Age 4 Year 1979

I remember having a good friend who stayed next door. Although we shared good times, I remember her as scary. She refused to let me go home! I think she liked me too much. I'm too likeable :p
[Newly Added: It was a few days or weeks before Chinese New Year. I can still remember when it happened because I stuffed one of those cotton bud lookalike flower (what's that called???) into my little nose. Well, I wanted to see if it'd fit into my nose. It did! Boy was I surprised and contented that I gotta know the answer but boy did i panicked when I couldn't get it outta my nose. Shit! Shit! Shit! I went crying to my mom who brought me to the doctor. The doctor pinched that 'thing' out .....from my ear! I guessed it went so deep in that it had to be taken out from the other side. It was covered with blood. As you can tell, I did learn my lesson. Such incident never happened again.]

Age 5 Year 1980

I remember attending PAP kindergarden class somewhere in Siglap.
I also remember paying 5 cents for a stick of satay snack.
My mom liked to bring me to her workplace which coincidentally, was B's father workplace. Yes. Our parents knew each other before we knew each other. How bizarre. It seemed like we are meant for each other.

Age 6 Year 1981

I remember attending kindergarden class near where I stay in Tanjong Katong.
I remember I went shopping with my mom for a tie. I chose a maroon one. It was used in my kindergarden graduation photoshoot. For some reason, I sulked during the photoshoot. It is apparent in the photo. Maybe because I had to wait for a darn long time - my surname starts with W.

Age 7 Year 1982

I had a good friend in school. His name is Mark. We took the same school bus and we attended the same class. I remember we had a lot of fun together. We kept laughing and laughing.
Oh and I pooped in my pants on my first day in school. It wasn't my fault. The teacher couldn't stop yapping! That's why I couldn't ask for permission to leave the class.
My school had the best prawn noodles. I think I ate it everyday for 2 years. Always with lotsa pepper.

Age 8 Year 1983

I remember crying very hard (with the rest of the class), when our teacher (she had a hump on her) told us that she was leaving. It was raining cats and dogs that day.
One of my teeth fell off while I was eating Kenturky. I panicked for a while and then I didn't care. The chicken was too delicious.
I had a tooth plucked out by the dentist in my school. Actually, I think she didn't tell me what the heck she was going to do. All I could remember was I left the dentist with a swollen lip with no feeling. I thought that was it. My lips were dead. I was so afraid. I kept crying and crying while I called my dad. He rushed down to comfort me. How nice.
[Newly Added: I remember I bidded for a bicycle during a 7th month dinner organised by some Chinese association. This was what happened. The guy on the stage kept shouting for bids, right? Then I see the adults putting up their hands. Everytime they put their hands up, the calling price went higher. I knew exactly what was happening and I knew exactly how the game was played. Even then, inside my little head, I couldn't help but to wonder if that uncle on stage would bother to entertain a kid like me. So I did the unthinkable without my parents' consent. I raised my hand when the guy asked if anybody wanna bid above $350. I raised my hand timidly - not too high, not too low. :p He saw me and shouted...Sa Pa Luck ah !!!! Sa Pa Luck ah !!!! I have never donated blood in my life.

I'm ashamed to say that I haven't.

Why?

Because I'm petrified of needles. I am scared :'(

But don't be affected by me please because my friends have assured me that blood donation is not as painful as we/I think. Most importantly, our blood can save lives. What's more important than to see a family rejoice over the recovery of their loved ones? I know it because my dad was in need of blood infusion for several days due to his stomach cancer.

B & I make a really good couple.

We love to buy things in bulk.

From shower foam, toilet paper, floor detergent to frozen food. We love to buy stuff by the truck load. When we used to stay in the penthouse, it was normal for us to buy 12 bottles of floor detergent at one go. Crazy right? :p

My housekeeper always shakes her head whenever we return from our shopping trip because our current home is really too small to contain our 'big' purchases. We really need to find our big house soon to store these things. I dunno why we are like that. Probably we hate the feeling when things run out.

Recently I spy a really cool fridge that should be able to contain all the 'junk' we buy. It is a side-by-side unique combination of matching refrigerator and a wine cabinet built by Liebherr. We're not avid wine collector / drinker so the size of the cooler is perfect for us. I believe this fridge is available in Singapore but I don't think we'll ever have the chance to own it. It's freaking more than $5,000, probably close to $10,000! Too expensive! If only it's $1,888. I'll definitely be the first one to grab it. Meanwhile, all I can do is dreammmm...

Nice fridge huh :') I need a god-father or a rich friend. Probably I should just start a fundraising campaign - appeal to 10,000 people for $1 each. Idea?

It's a great day today.

The rain.

If only everyday is Sunday.

Life would be perfect if we have access to unlimited amount of money, good health and good company. I wouldn't ask for more :o)

We started off our day with lunch at our favourite pig's organs soup stall aka (Zhu Zhar Dang or Ter Hwang Kiam Chye) in Serangoon Gardens.

If you like this delicacy as much as we do, you must come and try it.

It's located in the bigger hawker centre (just next to the famous chomp chomp).

Since you are there, do try out the bakery next door.

They sell the most authentic bread that we used to buy from our typical neighbourhood bakeries. Their turnover is pretty fast so you can usually buy freshly baked bread from the oven - yummy!

After lunch, we headed to Seletar Farmway with the intention to visit our favourite parrot. This parrot is a really cute cockatoo. It always begs us for a pat on the head. Unfortunately, it wasn't there today. :( Kinda miss the fellow.

It's nice to have a really cold ale or basically alcohol at 4pm in the afternoon. We had it in a pub along Bukit Timah. I actually took a photo of the place and was ready to post it here until the boss of the pub asked me rudely why I took a photo of his blardy place. Well, since he was rude to me, I shan't give him any 'publicity' even in my humble blog. Blardy ang moh.

After the unpleasant experience, we made a good decision to try out the newly opened Italian restaurant - Cacio e Pepe located along Upper Paya Lebar Road on 4/6 Rochdale Road to be exact.

I love this new restaurant.

Although it was our first time there, lady boss, Jackie and pal (probably the other boss), Bee Eng, treated us with sincerity and warmth. Their hospitality really made us feel very welcome. And because it's not located in atas areas like Chip Bee Gardens or Bukit Timah, this place is totally cool and unpretendious. Well done, gals.

Their food is also to die for. Simply delicious and far far farrrr better than the likes of Da Paolo.

Their pricing is very reasonable since their serving is huge. Our order of 2 appertisers and 1 main stuffed us to the brim.

We had Vongole and Cozze, Calamari Fritti and Pietro Pizza plus a capuccino. All for only $63.80. Mad reasonable right?

Good food, nice ambience, friendly service. I rate them 5/5. Visit them if you can. You will not be disappointed. For reservations, call them at 6281 1905.

This is the house that we're (or rather I am) keen in.

We could only take a photo of the facet because you know how suspicious agents can be.

It's located at Jalan Kayu. I know. The area sounds really ulu but hey, it's just behind the stretch of eateries which is good for my father and also for us whenever we feel too lazy to cook or eat out. I'm not sure when was the last time you were here. This place has changed a little. The restaurants here have gotten a little (just a little) more sophisticated than before. I got a feeling that it'll become the Holland Village of the area. Besides, it's within walking distance to the LRT station. I also spy that a mall will be built somewhere down the street.

This property might look abit small from the picture here. It's actually on a 2000 sq ft land with 2,600 built up space. It has 1 room on the first floor which I intend to turn into an entertainment room when our friends or relatives come visit us.

On the second floor, there are 3 and half rooms. Why 3 and half? Because one of the rooms actually has a half size room that kinda look like an entertainment area which of course can be converted to an extra room if necessary. One of the rooms also has a nice balcony (with no view :p).

How? What do you think? Should we get this or wait till next year?

Forever friends ???????

Maybe not.

Recently, many of my facebook friends have been complaining about the pain or unhappiness caused by their so-called friends. The stories are almost the same. They are hurt because of betrayal. They are hurt because of hypocrisy.

Why must we treat each other like this? We are friends after all, aren't we?

No matter what, we have spent good and memorable times with each other, right?

No?

Well I kept dwelling on it and realised that I'm actually committing the same 'crime' as well. I think I'm a hypocrite. I would actually rather have a relationship with that someone whom I don't fancy much because I don't want to tear the group apart.

Is that hypocrisy?

Yeah, I think so.

But I reckon that also meant trying to live and let live.

We make friends because we want to have fun together and to have a shoulder when we need to cry on.

Whatever it is, the most important thing is friends shouldn't take advantage of one another. Relationship is about give and take, if you just take and take, how can?

I don't think anyone can be completely happy and complaint-free about anyone else.

How can?

Even couples squabble and complain about one another.

Siblings do that.

Friends will do that too.

I guess we just need to learn how to tolerate better and let go of small issues that won't kill us.

Grow up, can?

I hate it when I'm betrayed and so for the same reason, I try not to betray my friends.

Believe me. Even the older generations also have problems with the concept of the so-called friends.

You and I are not alone.

Who knows what will happen in the future.

I finally got the DSLR from my boss. It's not a 450D though. He sold me his EOS50D instead. A higher grade version and still at a very good price. I like :)

Over the years, I realised that I've grown a lot domesticated and 'timid'. I no longer yearn for the opportunity to meet new friends. Just a few years ago before I got married, I would jump at any chance to widen my circle of friends. I used to meet groups of strangers regularly from internet forums. But now, I dread at the thought of it. Small talks, awkward silence and fake laughters are not one of my favourites now. I really like my friends now. No more bitchiness, bitterness, you name it.

I'm more into furniture refurbishment these days. Unfortunately, I don't have the chance to actually have my hands on it because I'm now living in a tiny apartment. Stuff that I can rescue from staircase landings cannot fit into our apartment :'( *wails* I need to find my dream house at a dream price. I don't think it's ever going to happen this year. Sighs.

Anyway, i would like to introduce you to one of my favourite DIY blogs.

Centsationalgirl is from Northern California. Full time mom. Part time attorney. Bargain hunter, salvager, incurable DIYer. She proclaims to be on a quest for diamond style on a dime, and she's all out to make her world fabulous, for less, one DIY project at a time.

She has the same motto as I do! I'm so happy to know that I'm not abnormal. :) Centsationalgirl would buy really cheap stuff from thrift shops or salvation army and transform them into really pretty things that I'd never imagined. The key that made me HIGH here is CHEAP to AMAZING. I like! Having said that, I think the Salvation Army in Singapore sucks, big time. They suck because they have a roomful of donated stuff, stuck in the room for so long. The very reason why they're stuck is because the staff priced them too high. Who in the right mind would buy a used and old item that's priced at 20% below the market price of a new item???? Dumbass!!! Learn from the Americans. Priced reasonably so that you can make room for more donated items, can?

WARNING: CURSING AND SWEARING AHEAD.

Now I finally know why the words "cursing" and "swearing" must come one after another - because they come naturally when a person gets freaking irritated and/or is in a lot a lot a lot a lot a lot of pain.

Following a really nice and relaxing manicure and pedicure treat from S yesterday, I thought I should give myself another treat by going for a 2-hour massage. Man! It turned out to be a 2-hour ordeal instead!

This massage has got to be the WORST one I had in my life. The masseuse was really heavy-handed. Every single one of her strokes either made me felt uncomfortable or in great pain. Now you must be thinking, "aiyo then tell her lah," Well I did and I told her many many times. I not only asked her to go soft, i also indicated to her many many times with my actions. I was practically curling in pain throughout the session.

Bitch! Asshole! I hope you fracture your thumb!

Now I have a headache because you squeezed my skull too hard.

So much for a relaxing massage. Hmmph!!

Singapore ranked second most expensive city in Asia, after Tokyo

Singapore has been ranked the second most expensive city in Asia, after Tokyo, with Hong Kong taking the third position.

In UBS’ Prices and Earnings 2009 study released on Thursday, Singapore is ranked 24th globally, in a comparison of living costs in 73 cities around the world. The study was based on data collected between March and April this year.

It found Oslo, Zurich, Copenhagen, Geneva, Tokyo and New York to be the world’s priciest cities based on a standardised basket of 122 goods and services. Mumbai, Delhi, Manila and Kuala Lumpur are cities with the lowest price levels.

The study said: “Asia is home to some of the world’s priciest cities and nowhere is the spread between most expensive and cheapest more pronounced.”

Employees in Copenhagen, Zurich, Geneva and New York have the highest gross wages, but Zurich and Geneva top the rankings in the international comparison of net wages.

In Asia, employees in Tokyo earn the highest wages, and are ranked 18th globally. Their salaries are about two times higher than those in Singapore, which came in at 40th globally. Manila, Jakarta and Mumbai are at the bottom of the table.

As for working hours, people work the longest hours in Asia and the Middle East, and the shortest in France. People work an average of 1,902 hours a year in the surveyed cities, but those in Asian and Middle Eastern cities work an average of 2,119 and 2,063 hours a year respectively.

Overall, Cairo employees work the longest hours, averaging 2,373 hours a year, followed by Seoul with 2,312 hours. In comparison, people in Lyon and Paris spend the least amount of time at work – putting in about 1,582 and 1,594 hours a year respectively.

What a Big Hoo-Ha....

I'm soooo blur that I should be crowned the blur-queen.

It happened to me many times and I did it again today.

I was supposed to be off in India tonight but because of my blunder, I'm back at home on my bed.

Sounds good huh...not really. Not only I caused inconvenience to myself, I caused inconvenience to a whole lot other of people. Not forgetting that I would be laughed at in the office for as long as I'm working there. Blahhhh...

It all happened just after I passed through the security check waiting to be boarded. Since I had some time to kill, I took out the stack of paperwork that I gotta fill for Indian immigration. Everything went on fine until I hit the question - VISA NUMBER & EXPIRY DATE.

Man!! My visa expires on Thursday but I will only get back on Friday!

Gosh. I panicked lah. Freak! How can I be so careless??!!???!!

I spoke to J who had the same problem and deliberated if I should go ahead and board the plane. He said previously he was thrown outta plane and sent directly to a Police Station in India. I thought "hey I could live with that' and was all set to do it until he said I could go to jail because I would be considered an illegal immigrant the moment I am thrown outta the plane.

Noooooooooo!!! I dun wanna go to jail. I dun wanna go to jail in Singapore and definitely I dun wanna go to jail in India! No offence to my Indian friends. The public roads of India are already quite filthy, I really can't imagine the condition of the cells.

So yeah, that's my story. I was very embarrassed lor. My luggage had to be thrown out of the plane and escorted out of the airport. Malu!

I tell you, I can't think of anyone else who can be as blur as me. As I was saying, this ain't my first time. I made these other blunders over the years...

(1) On my trip to London from Singapore many years ago. I thought my British Airways flight was scheduled to depart at 11pm. But actually it departed at 10pm. Bleah! Luckily there was a Quantas flight at 11pm so the ticketing officer put me on that flight instead without additional charges. Phew! BLUR!

Lately I'm in the mood for some serious DIY.

C'mon. Get your head outta the gutter.

I meant DIY - Home Decor.

Before we made an offer for the house and before it was rejected, I fantasized about how I'll be doing up our newly 'acquired' 2-storey home. Now friends, before you get all excited that I finally found a place, I haven't. I'm still in a position where I get to see property prices go up uppp upppp right before my eyes. *sighs*

Anyway, I am particularly interested in DIY because we have to keep the cost down. B & I ain't exactly anywhere near millionaire status so we need to keep our expenses at bay. Besides, as you might already know, I'm pretty house-proud. It would give me even more satisfaction when one of my 'understudied' DIY creation turns out well. Why 'understudied'? Because I'm not all that original & creative. I usually gather my ideas from loads of pictures from different websites before deciding what I'll settle for eventually.

In this post, I'll share some cheap & chic ideas to update your bedroom. Once again, please take note that these pictures ain't mine. It's impossible to find a landed property within our budget and liking now.

Just 2 weeks ago, we thought we found one even though the location was far from perfect - somewhere along Jalan Kayu.

When we finally got the bank approval, we eagerly made the offer for the house. It turned out that the owner had changed his mind. He's not selling anymore!!!!

**WAILS!**

I feel so tired.

Hold firm, first-time home buyers

Two Sundays ago, my editor wrote in this column about property advice his parents gave him just before he bought his first home.

He was unaware, but on the day his column was published, I took the plunge and bought my very first property with my partner.

His words obviously resonated with me: My purchase was an apartment way below $1,000 psf and under $1million, and reasonably near an MRT station by 2015.

But beyond these guidelines, I discovered that buying the first home was a lot more difficult and agonising than I had ever imagined – a process determined by so many pressures and factors.

For the longest time, the classified advertisements on Saturdays were my best friend. I zoomed in on cheap private properties because my partner and I were deemed ineligible for HDB flats (he is neither a citizen nor a permanent resident).

I pored through every single column, rang countless property agents and viewed so many apartments that one blurred into the next, and I had to start remembering them by something like the colour of the owner’s cat.

At the start of the year, I had seen some potential homes, but told myself to be patient – wait till year-end for prices to bottom out.

Well, apparently, that period of time was the bottom, and I had missed the boat.

Asking prices for properties soared as much as $50,000 to $100,000 more in just the difference of a month from April to May.

Queues started appearing at new project launches, blank cheques were being written for agents and a certain euphoria started to grip the market.

As my search deepened, the further my heart sank, for my dream apartment seemed unreachable as unrealistic sellers priced in Singapore’s economic recovery even before any evidence of it.

All through the hype, I had to remind myself not to be pressured into making a rash decision just because Singaporeans’ infamous ‘kiasuism’ for property was manifesting itself again.

One key factor which kept me grounded was this: affordability.

According to one widely used international standard to measure housing affordability, the monthly mortgage payment should not exceed 20 per cent to 30per cent of a household’s total monthly income.

Do the sums to derive your comfortable monthly outlay, ask banks to calculate from that what your total home loan is, and you get what I call your ‘affordable psf price’.

Often, you will get tired of the hunt like I did sometimes, see a nice home out of this budget and contemplate upping the psf just to get the search over and done with.

At times like these, I wanted so much to believe the usual spiel that agents give about land-scarce Singapore and how home values will always rise, even if the price you pay now seems high.

But whatever you do, do not budge from this price.

A story I was told warned me this could only be foolhardy.

During the 1997 property boom, my friend’s parents had bought a unit in the area I was looking at – a time when it was highly fashionable to invest in new suburban homes to ride the property wave – not unlike now, actually.

But when the Asian financial crisis hit the region, the property boom-turned-bubble eventually burst. The value of their property plunged more than $200 psf thereafter and has still not recovered to the original level a decade on.

With this in mind, I did more homework, studying historic psf prices of the estate at its lowest and highest levels, and made sure I bought only at a price that had potential upside.

It baffles both me and some analysts I speak to that new suburban homes in Ang Mo Kio, for example, are selling for $1,100 psf.

Where is your upside when you are already paying city-fringe prices for suburban estates?

Be firm about saying no to unrealistic sellers who like to test the market with bullish prices if they are beyond your budget.

If everybody kept a level head about purchasing properties, it would certainly help avoid turning a property boom into a property bubble as in the last decade.

No matter how heartbreaking, I said ‘no’ to many dream homes before finding one with sincere sellers who sold at a price that was a win-win for both parties.

My home-hunting journey ended only after I had made hard decisions to narrow down my options to specific projects, doing research and keeping to my affordable psf price.

As a result, National Day this year has taken on a special meaning for me because for the first time as a citizen, I have a physical stake in the country.

Our very own home: a spacious apartment set on a hill at the edge of a rainforest, a quiet, green haven away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Finding that first home can be an exhausting experience, but also a rewarding one if you safeguard yourself against huge risks which could otherwise come back to haunt you.

Looking for a home to buy? Try resale

Now that the property market has picked up, individual sellers are out in full force.

They are putting up their properties for sale, from the newest uncompleted homes to fully furnished tenanted units and ageing apartments.

For home seekers, this means that apart from brand-new launches, there are plenty of choices in the resale market.

Even developer Keppel Land (KepLand) has started releasing tenanted, fully furnished units at its 99-year leasehold Caribbean at Keppel Bay for sale.

The 969-unit development, launched in 2000 at about $800 per sq ft (psf), had been fully sold, except for 168 units that KepLand has kept for leasing purposes under Caribbean Residences.

The developer declined to disclose the number of transactions, but said asking prices are around $1,300 psf to $1,400 psf. Caveats lodged last month show deals done from $1,131 psf to $1,218 psf.

But, said HSR Property Group executive director Eric Cheng, ‘the resale market is not that hot compared with 2007, when you could sell one apartment within one or two days’.

Right now, only the new projects are moving very fast, he said.

He added that ‘market sentiment is strong as people are very confident. I think a bubble is forming but it is not near the bursting level yet’.

In the resale market, not only are the units bigger, but living space is also larger as there are fewer bay windows and planter boxes unlike in new condo units.

Prices are also much more affordable, said Chesterton Suntec International’s research and consultancy director Colin Tan. But at the moment, ‘a large amount of the liquidity or excess money in the market is going mostly into the new launches, that is, uncompleted properties’, he said.

‘The genuine buyer may end up paying a high premium for a newly launched unit and…spend his whole life working to pay off the mortgage.’

Buyers may want to consider already-built or older projects near new launches which are selling at lower prices, property experts said.

‘Quite a number of buyers are not aware that there are better buys in the resale market. They know only how to buy from showflats,’ said an investor who recently profited from the sale of a Citylights unit, which he had bought for just $550 psf three years ago and sold at $1,200 psf.

Buyers should ask themselves which properties are available for the budget they have, he suggested. Then, they should narrow down their choices and pick a unit that gives them the most value for their money.

In the Tanah Merah area, deals caveated last month at the nearly completed Casa Merah were at $699 psf to $751 psf, below the average launch price of $810 psf at the sold-out project Optima just next door. Some sellers at Casa Merah may now be asking for higher prices but it remains to be seen if buyers will bite.

Sellers at other completed projects may also be asking for more, as Mr Tan pointed out. He cited an owner of a low-floor 1,453 sq ft unit at Savannah CondoPark in Simei Rise who recently raised his price from $850,000 to $920,000 in line with market sentiment.

This is despite the fact that the owner has failed to find a buyer at the earlier price since January, said Mr Tan.

Greed often gets in the way of a deal, property experts said.

Said the unnamed investor: ‘In order to entice buyers to buy resale units, sellers must price them at least 10 per cent below developer units in the vicinity.’

In general, prices of many completed projects are still falling but a few of the better ones have seen some price increases recently, said Mr Tan. However, even then, the increases are minimal compared with those of the new launches.

For those who are ready to commit to a property purchase, it may pay to look at completed homes in the resale market.
